The day before yesterday I asked my boyfriend, “why are people from New York so uptight and rude?” This was of course after I finished cursing some driver out for not driving up to MY standards. My boyfriend goes on and on about how LA people live life with no aggression and are peaceful.
I would love to be that way!
Well I wasn’t the only person to think of us New Yorkers as rude and crude. A group of residents led by film-maker Michael Morgenstern plan on having a sort of event on June 1st where they will hand out anywhere from 30,000 to 200,000 name tags to people. This will break the invisible shield we all have on and help people make an initiation to speak to other strangers, say hello or tell them to have a nice day, heck hold a door for someone!
It’s possible for people to change for the better if their around it constantly. I remember living in Rockville, Maryland for two months and after so many weeks of being uptight, loud and angry I had changed. My room mates were from Texas, LA and Puerto Rico all 5 of them were not at all like me (Type A personality). Being around them and others who didn’t let things get to them changed me. When I came back home people noticed I had a different aura about me.
Unfortunately, that all changed about two weeks into being around damn New Yorkers again (go figure).
So I definitely applaud and encourage Michael Morgenstern and the others for holding such an event. You can help too! Either donate money, help distribute name tags or take photos/video and post them on your social media account. Visit Name Tag Day for more information.
Lets change for the better and appreciate things and people around us. What’s the worst that can happen?
