*Donating Hair for a Good Cause*
As a parent we always try to school our kids to become the best human they can be; love one another, help one another, be polite, be generous and countless other important traits we want to instill in them. But, it’s one thing to to just talk about it and another to show them with an example.
What we try to teach in our family
We’ve always been a family wanting to help others– during Christmas we buy a few new items for kids in need. When we see someone in need of food we buy them some food or offer what we have at hand. We even try to encourage saying ‘Good Morning’ or throwing someone a simple smile to brighten up their day. It’s those little acts of kindness for one another I want her to take notice of– she needs to be grateful for the big or little of something she has in her life.
It was during Christmas time when we spoke about how lucky she was and how many other children in this world don’t even have a bed to call their own. From there we spoke about all other things children don’t have, and the topic of sick kids came up. I decided to show her some videos of kids with cancer who have a lot more to deal with than her. It definitely struck something in her that take notice. With her hair being already long I asked if she wanted to donate her hair to help other kids out there and she was taken aback for a minute. At this time she was all about her hair and being like Rapunzel, but after discussing how her hair would grow back because she isn’t sick and how beauty isn’t on the outside she was dedicated to her mission.
Where to donate your hair
We will be donating her hair to Locks of Love; a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Anyone can donate their hair, I thought just because your hair had been dyed they wouldn’t accept it, but they do, just not bleached hair. We waited until Ziana could chop off 10 inches, but you don’t need 10 inches in order to donate.
– The 10 inches will be used for a hairpiece. However, shorter hair will be separated from the ponytails and sold to offset the manufacturing costs.
– Although the shorter hair can’t be used in the hairpieces, it greatly helps to reduce costs. –
– Gray hair can also be used for manufacturing costs
It’s never too early or too late to educate your child of things outside their bubble, pop it and expose them appropriately before others do it for you in a not-so kind way.
