Internships- Worth it?

Whether or not I’m happy with the major I choose in college (Criminal Justice) that’s not the point of this post, I wanted to speak on the importance of internships and my amazing experience with one.

I loved college, yes it was hard with all the learning, studying and taking exams, but when you were on your breaks it was fun to hang with your friends and meet new friends. I went to school from 7:30 AM to about 11:00 AM, I loved morning classes. I had my fun, but I studied hard. If I had the chance to do extra credit I was doing it, if I had to have a meeting with the teacher I was there, the library YUP, I was there too. I also would stop by the internship office my last two years. I had interned at a government job, child advocacy center and my last internship was with HACU ( Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities).

I moved to Rockville, Maryland for 6 weeks for this internship to work at another government position and it was the best experience of my life! It was a whole bunch of interns who roomed with you or in the same building. I had 5 other room mates! Can you imagine living with 5 other women!? It was crazy! Me and my room-mate always fought every other week. One of the main fights was her iPhone going off in the middle of the night or that annoying iPhone sound of the alarm going off, you guys know that sound! Anyways, Monday through Friday we worked hard and when we left work we partied hard. We always went out after work, experienced new things; like where I had to learn to cook for myself. The rice I was bad at making, so I had to end up making microwaveable rice lol. The internship was amazing! I met amazing long-life friends. They changed me for the time being. I came in with such the New York attitude and after a while I was becoming a sweet and caring person who spoke before attacking people. Well that changed about two weeks into me coming back to New York, go figure. I love my room-mates and they will always be in my heart.

These internships help build my résumé geared towards the Criminal Justice, unfortunately. I say unfortunately because I hate this field! Maybe that should be another blog about the position I’m at now? Regardless, it is very important to intern, many times you don’t get paid, but it is worth it. Your still in school and you can work while during internships. The other two internships were once or twice a week. The connections you make in the field is worth it. I highly recommend it and it pays off.
